Taghazout: a day trip to Morocco's surf village#

Twenty minutes up the coast from Agadir sits Taghazout, a small fishing village turned surf town that has quietly become one of the most likeable places on the Moroccan Atlantic. Whitewashed houses climb the hillside, surfboards lean against walls, and the whole place runs at the pace of the tide.

If you want a change of scene from the city, Taghazout makes an easy and rewarding day trip — or a relaxed base of your own.

What to do in Taghazout#

Surf, or watch it. Taghazout is the heart of Moroccan surfing, with famous breaks nearby such as Anchor Point and Hash Point. Beginners can take a lesson on the gentler inside waves; everyone else can simply watch from a terrace with a coffee.

Walk the village. Taghazout is small enough to explore on foot in an hour. Climb a little above the main street for the best views along the coast, and down by the harbour to see the fishing boats come in.

Eat well, slowly. The village is full of small cafes and restaurants serving fresh fish, tagines and excellent breakfasts. It is a place to linger, not to rush.

Catch the sunset. Few things in the region beat a Taghazout sunset. The village faces west, and the light over the bay is the reason so many people stay longer than they planned.

Take a yoga class. Alongside the surf, Taghazout has become a centre for yoga and wellbeing retreats, and drop-in classes are easy to find.

When to go#

Taghazout works year-round. Autumn and winter bring the most consistent surf and a pleasant, mild climate, while spring and early summer are calmer and good for swimming. Mornings are quiet; the village wakes up around midday and stays lively into the evening.

Getting there from Agadir#

It is a short drive along the coast, and you can reach it by car, by taxi or as part of a guided trip. Many visitors combine it with nearby Paradise Valley for a full day out, or with Imsouane, a little further north, which has one of the longest waves in Africa.

Our Agadir activities page lists coastal and surfing trips, and we are happy to arrange a driver so you can spend the day there and come back whenever you like.

Where to stay#

You can visit Taghazout on a day trip and still be based in comfort in Agadir. Our Aliya Luxury Apartments sit between the city and the coast, which makes the village an easy morning or afternoon out — close enough for sunset, far enough to come home to a quiet bed.

Taghazout is the kind of place that rewards a slower plan. Go for the surf, stay for the light, and let the village do the rest.
